Tooth Extraction Q & A

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

Dr. Malik believes in saving your tooth whenever possible. But if your tooth is too badly damaged to be rescued with a filling or a root canal, or if your gums or bone are also damaged, he may have to extract your tooth.

Sometimes teeth must be extracted because you have too many to fit healthily in your mouth. When your wisdom teeth (third molars) aren’t able to come in properly and get stuck, also called impacted, below the surface of your gums, Dr. Malik removes them so your other teeth stay in proper alignment. Dr. Malik also may recommend a tooth extraction when you’re having your teeth straightened and you need more room for your teeth to align properly.

What are signs that I might need a tooth extraction?

Even if you think your tooth might be damaged beyond repair, Dr. Malik may be able to restore it. Whenever you have the symptoms of a decayed or damaged tooth, you should come to Unique Dental Care for an evaluation. Signs that your tooth needs attention include:

  • Foul breath
  • Aching or painful tooth or gums
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Discolored tooth
  • Foul or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Lumpy, swollen gums
  • Swollen neck
  • Wisdom teeth that can’t come in

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The entire team at Unique Dental is dedicated to making your tooth extraction as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Dr. Malik has a light touch, and he always keeps the mood light, too. He uses the most advanced dental tools and techniques possible, including state-of-the-art anesthesia options.

You can choose from:

  • Local anesthetic
  • Laughing gas (nitrous oxide)
  • Oral sedative
  • IV sedative (twilight anesthesia)

After your procedure, Dr. Malik explains your postoperative instructions and answers any questions you have. You can use over-the-counter medications to control pain and swelling, or Dr. Malik can prescribe a painkiller to keep you comfortable.
